Grand Palace – Royal Palace
The Grand Palace in Bangkok, built in 1782, is a vast complex of buildings that served as the official residence of the kings of Siam (now Thailand). Although the king no longer resides there, the palace is still used for official events. Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River and surrounded by walls, the complex includes numerous buildings, halls, and pavilions set among lawns, gardens, and courtyards.
Jim Thompson House Museum
The Jim Thompson House is a museum in Bangkok, located in the Pathumwan district. This complex was created by American entrepreneur Jim Thompson, known for his role in revitalizing the Thai silk industry and his collection of Southeast Asian art. The house, built in 1959, consists of six ancient Thai houses that were relocated and restored. After Thompson’s mysterious disappearance in 1967, the house became a popular tourist attraction, managed by the James HW Thompson Foundation under the patronage of Princess Sirindhorn.
Yaowarat Night Market
The Chinatown market in Bangkok, or Yaowarat Night Market, is a must-visit for food lovers and adventurers. Located along Yaowarat Road, this lively market offers a wide range of Chinese and Thai dishes, from steaming bowls of noodles and crispy dumplings to exotic treats like fried insects and durian. In addition to food, you can find souvenirs, clothing, and electronics. The atmosphere is bustling and vibrant, with typical Asian sights, sounds, and smells. When visiting, be prepared to haggle, bring cash, and wear comfortable clothes. Keep an eye on your belongings, as crowded areas can be prone to petty theft.
Wang Lang Market
Wang Lang Market, located in the Bangkok Noi district, is a lively daily market on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River. The name “Wang Lang” means “palace at the back” and refers to the historical site that once housed Prince Anurak Devesh’s palace during King Rama I’s reign. This open-air market offers a wide variety of food and snacks, clothing, and jewelry, and is particularly praised for its street food stalls serving traditional dishes. Many consider it a great place to experience local life. The market is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and is easily reachable by ferry (Prannok stop).
