Kabosu’s owner confirmed his death in a blog post today (May 24).

he dog was over 17 years old and went viral in 2013, thanks to a photo of the Shiba Inu dog that captured the internet’s attention and quickly became immortalized on social media as the Doge meme, often accompanied by Comic Sans text.

After gaining fame from the meme, the Japanese dog Kabosu became the inspiration for the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.

Owner Atsuko Sato wrote on her blog that the dog had “fallen into a deep sleep” and “passed away quietly.” Translated from Japanese, she added poetically: “To all of you who loved me, really, thank you very much. Kabocha was the happiest being in the world, I think she was a dog. And I, the happiest person in the world, was her owner. Kabocha is still smiling, wagging her tail.” Atsuko will hold a farewell party for the famous Doge on Sunday, May 26 at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City.

Dogecoin paid tribute to Kabosu on X, writing: “Today Kabosu, our community’s friend and inspiration, peacefully passed in the arms of her person. The impact this dog had on the world is immeasurable. She was a being who knew only happiness and limitless love. Please keep her spirit and her family in your heart, and most importantly, carry her with you as your story continues – we are all fortunate that her story touched and shaped ours.”

Naturally, fans have created many memes in homage to Kabosu to say “rest in peace.” One said “she is resting with Harambe now,” and another added: “I was so happy to follow this Doge, I hope it will continue to make people smile forever.” Many said “thank you for all the memes” while sending their love to the owner and the Doge community. Many said “a legend joins the stars,” while others added: “RIP, you contributed a lot to the world.”

Rest in peace, the Doge king.
