Sardinian Railway Museum of Cagliari

The Sardinian Railway Museum of Cagliari is an essential stop for those who want to discover the history and development of Sardinia’s railway network, starting from 1884. Located inside the Cagliari station, the museum houses an extensive collection of documents and objects that testify to the evolution of Sardinian railways. Among the most important pieces are the lounge of the royal carriage, destroyed by the bombings of 1943, and the steam locomotive D744.003.

Founded in 1985, the museum was established following the interest generated by a retrospective exhibition organized by the State Railways in the Cittadella dei Musei of Cagliari in 1984, to celebrate 100 years of railways in Sardinia. The aim was to create a lasting testimony of the industrial archaeology of the Royal Sardinian Railways and the “Concesse”, ensuring the preservation of what had survived the ravages of time and the scrapping of old locomotives and other precious artifacts.

Municipal Art Gallery

The Municipal Art Gallery of Cagliari is an important museum institution located in a historic building in the public gardens of Largo Dessì. Inaugurated in 1933, it is the main seat of the civic museums of Cagliari, which also include the Palazzo di Città, the Stefano Cardu Siamese Art Museum, and the Ethnographic Museum.

The Gallery is housed in the powder magazine of the Savoy arsenal, a structure dating back to the late eighteenth century. The neoclassical main facade, which serves as a scenic backdrop for the Viale dei Giardini Pubblici, was built in 1828 by Carlo Boyl di Putifigari. After ceasing its military use at the end of the 19th century, the building was acquired by the Municipality of Cagliari.

Today, the Municipal Art Gallery is a place of great cultural significance, preserving and exhibiting invaluable artworks, offering visitors a journey through the history and art of the region.

Elephant Tower

The Elephant Tower is the second tallest medieval tower in Cagliari, after the San Pancrazio tower. It was built, along with its twin, the San Pancrazio Tower, by the Pisans who dominated the city of Cagliari from the mid-13th century, to defend the entrances to the Castle, the seat of the city’s political, military, and religious power.

The building, one of the city’s most important monuments, is located in the Castello district next to the Church of San Giuseppe and can be accessed from Via Santa Croce, Via Università, and Via Nuova. A visit to the monument allows you to admire vast panoramas of the city and the surrounding area.
